Balayage and highlights are two of the most requested color services at our Sugar Land studio — and two of the most confused. Both lighten the hair, both create dimension, and both can look stunning. The difference lies in how the color is applied and how it lives with you over the following months. As a color specialist, I help clients choose between them every week. Here is how I think it through.
What Is Balayage?
Balayage is a freehand painting technique — the word is French for "to sweep." Rather than working in foils, I hand-paint lightener directly onto the surface of the hair, concentrating it toward the mid-lengths and ends and feathering it softly near the roots. The result is a natural, sun-kissed gradient that mimics the way hair lightens in summer. Because there is no hard line of regrowth, balayage grows out gracefully, which makes it a lower-maintenance choice for many clients.
What Are Traditional Highlights?
Highlights use foils to isolate woven sections of hair, which are then lightened from root to tip. Because each section is wrapped in foil, the lightener works more uniformly and can lift to a brighter, more defined result. Highlights are wonderful when you want consistent brightness throughout, an all-over lighter look, or crisp, even dimension — including face-framing brightness around the front.
The Real Differences: Upkeep and Look
The choice usually comes down to maintenance and the finish you love:
- Grow-out — balayage softens as it grows, so you can stretch the time between visits. Highlights start at the root, so regrowth becomes visible sooner.
- Brightness — foils deliver more uniform, all-over lift; balayage gives a softer, more blended, lived-in effect.
- Placement — balayage is artfully concentrated where the light would naturally hit; highlights are evenly distributed through woven sections.
- Commitment — balayage tends to mean fewer touch-ups over the year, while highlights reward a more regular schedule to stay crisp.
Cost and Which Suits You
At With Love Hair Studio, balayage — our Subtle Transformation — starts at $225 and takes roughly two to three hours depending on your hair. Partial highlights and face-framing start at $165. If you love a soft, natural grow-out and want to visit less often, balayage is likely your match. If you want bright, uniform, all-over lightness and do not mind a more regular upkeep rhythm, highlights are the way to go. Many clients land somewhere in between, and that is exactly what a consultation is for — I tailor the placement to your hair, your face, and your routine.
